Grove City blasts Bethany 6-1; stays perfect in PAC
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team scored three times in the first 20 minutes en route to a 6-1 triumph over visiting Bethany Wednesday afternoon at College Field in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
Sophomores Nathaniel Jones (Haymarket, Va./Emmanuel Christian) and Adam Ludwig (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) each scored two goals and added an assist for Grove City (3-2-1, 2-0 PAC).
Jones' 11th-minute header into the net off a pass from junior Jake Burns (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) put Grove City on top. Two minutes later, Bethany tied the match at 1-1 on a Dave Weibe goal.
Grove City broke the match open in the 20th minute with two goals in 47 seconds. Ludwig scored off a Jones feed while at the 19:5 mark Burns blasted in his first goal of the year via an assist from freshman Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk).
Ludwig's unassisted goal in the 38th minute put the Wolverines up 4-1 at halftime. Jones ignited Grove City in the second half with his second goal of the match, which came in the 68th minute. Sophomore Phillip Bresson (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth Christian) supplied the assist.
McNees capped Grove City's outburst with his third goal of the year, tying him with Jones for the team lead. Ludwig provided the assist.
In goal, sophomore Joel Gladfelter (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) earned the victory, playing 80-plus minutes. Freshman Dave Mahtani (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) finished the match in goal for Grove City.
The six goals are the most scored by Grove City in a regular-season conference match since a 6-0 victory over Thiel Sept. 21, 1998. Grove City also defeated Thiel 6-0 in a PAC tournament match Nov. 1, 2000.
Grove City will visit Bethany (0-6-1, 0-2-1) Saturday at 1 p.m.
