Grove City blanks Thiel 3-0 to give Lyle 250th victory
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 6-1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, 9-6-2 overall, with a 3-0 whitewash of visiting Thiel Saturday afternoon at College Field.
The win is the 250th in the career of 31st-year head coach Dr. Don Lyle. Lyle (250-191-30) is the 25th active Division III men's soccer coach to reach the 250-win plateau. Only 37 coaches in Division III history have won 250 matches in their career.
Freshman Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) scored twice while sophomore Adam Ludwig (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) scored between McNees' tallies and also had an assist.
McNees put Grove City up in the 20th minute off a direct kick from Ludwig, breaking a scoreless tie. Ludwig doubled the lead three minutes into the second half by scoring on a penalty kick. It is the Wolverines' first penalty kick goal of the season.
McNees capped the scoring with a goal in the 57th minute following an assist from sophomore Joe O'Donnell (Brackenridge, Pa./St. Joseph). It is O'Donnell's first career assist.
In goal, sophomore Joel Gladfelter (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) stopped three shots in 81 minutes while freshman Dave Mahtani (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) had one save in nine minutes to complete the shutout.
Grove City visits PAC foe Waynesburg Monday afternoon.
