Wolverines nip La Roche in non-conference action
PITTSBURGH -- Sophomore Adam Ludwig (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) scored on a 74th-minute penalty kick to lift Grove City (10-6-3) past host La Roche, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action.
The victory assures the Wolverines of a winning season, their seventh in the last nine seasons. Overall, Grove City has finished at or above .500 52 times in 64 years.
Junior Peter Williams (Charlotte, N.C./First Assembly) put the Wolverines up in the 26th minute with his first goal of the season. Freshman Brendan McCommas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) supplied the assist. La Roche (7-8-4) tied the match early in the second half before Ludwig's penalty kick provided the difference.
Sophomore goalkeeper Joel Gladfelter (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) stopped two shots to earn his ninth win of the year. Grove City out-shot the Red Hawks 15-11.
Grove City will host Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Washington and Jefferson Saturday at 3 p.m. The Wolverines (6-1-2 PAC) can clinch home-field advantage throughout the PAC Championship Tournament Nov. 4-8 with a win Saturday. A tie or loss gives Washington and Jefferson (7-2-0 PAC) home-field.
By virtue of Westminster's (6-2-2 PAC) tie with Bethany Wednesday, Grove City has clinched a bye into the semifinals Nov. 6.
