Wolverines roll past Pitt-Bradford in 2004 opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior forward Ben Hoffman (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) and sophomore forward Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) each scored a pair of goals Wednesday afternoon, helping lead the Grove City College men's soccer team to a 7-0 win over visiting Pitt-Bradford at College Field in both teams' 2004 opener.

Hoffman scored twice in the first half, vaulting Grove City to a 4-0 lead by the intermission. After junior Nate Jones (Haymarket, Va./Emmanuel Christian) scored the first goal of the match in the 18th minute, Hoffman scored twice within a three-minute span.

Hoffman doubled Grove City's lead with an unassisted goal in the 28th minute. Three minutes later, senior co-captain Peter Williams (Charlotte, N.C./First Assembly) assisted Hoffman's second goal.

Freshman Barrett Snyder (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) scored his first collegiate goal in the 33rd minute to close the first-half scoring. Sophomore Brendan McCommas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) tallied his first collegiate goal in the 53rd minute while McNees closed the scoring with two goals in a three-minute span.

McNees, the Wolverines' leading scorer in 2003 with nine goals, scored off a cross from senior Jake Burns (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) in the 66th minute. Three minutes later, Snyder assisted McNees' second score. Burns also assisted on Jones' goal in the first half.

Junior goalkeeper Joel Gladfelter (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) stopped two shots in recording the shutout. Grove City out-shot Pitt-Bradford 23-3.

The Wolverines will play in the Johns Hopkins Classic this Friday and Saturday. Grove City (1-0) meets the host Blue Jays at 2:30 p.m. Friday, then battles Shenandoah on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Baltimore.
