Wolverines stop Westminster win streak
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sophomore forward Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) scored a pair of second-half goals while junior goalkeeper Joel Gladfelter (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) recorded six saves, helping the Grove City College men's soccer team upend regionally-ranked Westminster, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon at College Field in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
Westminster (11-1, 4-1 PAC) entered the match on an 11-match win streak and was ranked sixth in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Grove City (7-5, 3-2 PAC) broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute as McNees scored his 11th goal of the season after a feed from senior Peter Williams (Charlotte, N.C./First Assembly). It is the third straight match in which Williams has assisted the eventual game-winning goal. It is also Williams' team-best sixth assist of the season.
Ten minutes later, junior Nate Jones (Haymarket, Va./Emmanuel Christian) supplied the assist on McNees' second goal of the match.
Gladfelter recorded his fourth shutout of the season and the eighth of his career. Westminster out-shot Grove City, 12-10. Grove City held an 8-6 shot advantage in the second half, however.
Winners of three straight, the Wolverines visit Waynesburg Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. in PAC action. The match was originally scheduled for Sept. 8 but was rescheduled due to heavy rains.
