McNees ties record in Wolverine victory

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City junior forward Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) tied a Grove City single-match record with four goals Wednesday afternoon as the Wolverines downed visiting Thiel, 5-1, in Presidents' Athletic Conference men's soccer action at College Field.

Grove City is now 5-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the PAC. The victory snaps a two-match losing streak for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 6:39 into the first half as senior Nate Jones (Haymarket, Va./Emmanuel Christian) scored his second goal of the season. McNees supplied the assist. McNees then scored off a Jones assist at the 12:00 mark to double the lead. Thirty-one seconds later, McNees scored his second goal with freshman Matt Sol (Crofton, Md./South River) providing the assist.

In the second half, McNees recorded the hat trick by scoring off Jones' corner kick at 47:19. He closed Grove City's scoring at the 65:00 mark with his fourth goal of the match. Senior Adam Ludwig (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) assisted.

Thiel's Kyle Rand broke up the shutout in the 85th minute for Thiel (1-7, 0-3 PAC). Grove City owned a 29-6 edge in shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College) stopped five shots to earn the victory.

Grove City will host Geneva Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
