Grove City blanks Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 6-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tuesday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over visiting Westminster at College Field.

Grove City junior forward Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) recorded his second hat trick in the last week by scoring all three Wolverine goals. McNees, who leads the Wolverines with 12 goals, put Grove City ahead 1-0 at the 11:02 mark with his first goal of the afternoon. Sophomore Barrett Snyder (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) assisted on the goal with a cross from the left corner.

The Wolverines doubled the lead less than three minutes later as McNees scored off an assist by senior midfielder Phil Bresson (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth Christian). Grove City led 2-0 at halftime.

McNees completed the hat trick at the 67:45 mark following a feed from junior defender Stuart McCommas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax).

In goal, sophomore Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College) earned the shutout win. It is Grove City's fourth shutout of the season. Grove City owned a 15-10 edge in shots. The Wolverines were whistled for 24 fouls while Westminster committed 16.

Westminster won the first meeting between the teams Sept. 24 in New Wilmington, 3-0. In 2004, the home team won each meeting by a 2-0 score.

Last Wednesday, McNees tied a school record with four goals in a 5-1 victory over Thiel. Grove City will face new PAC rival Thomas More Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Crestview Hills, Ky.
