Grove City nips Bethany in PAC semis

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior forward Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) headed an Eli Lamborn (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) cross into the net at the 87:30 mark Wednesday afternoon, vaulting the Grove City College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Bethany in a Presidents' Athletic Conference Men's Championship Tournament semifinal at College Field.

The second-seeded Wolverines (11-5-4) will now play either No. 4 Westminster or No. 1 Washington and Jefferson Saturday afternoon in the tournament championship match. Bethany falls to 12-6-1.

Grove City broke the scoreless tie as Lamborn, a sophomore, brought the ball along the right sideline and crossed it to McNees about 10 yards in front of the goal. McNees headed the ball past Bethany goalkeeper Kosta Floros for his team-leading 16th goal of the season. For Lamborn, it is his first career assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College) recorded the victory in goal, stopping 11 shots. The Bison out-shot Grove City, 15-10. It is Grove City's 11th shutout of the season.

Grove City will be making its fourth trip to the PAC tournament finals since the tournament's inception in 1999. The Wolverines advanced to the finals in 1999, 2001 and 2003. Grove City is seeking its first PAC title since 1996 and the program's first-ever outright PAC title.
