Historic day for Grove City as Wolverines blank UPB, 3-0

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team earned its first victory of 2006 Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 win over visiting Pitt-Bradford at College Field. Grove City is now 1-1.

Senior forward Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) became Grove City's all-time leading goal scorer by recording a hat trick for the Wolverines. He now has 49 career goals. Ross Emerson held the previous record for 50 years, scoring 48 goals between 1952 and 1956.

First-year Grove City head coach Mike Dreves earned his first win as a collegiate head coach. Meanwhile, the shutout is Grove City's 50th since 2000.

All three of McNees' goals came on penalty kicks in the second half. McNees' first goal came on a penalty kick at 48:05. He then added penalty kick goals at 63:11 and 89:15 to help seal the victory. McNees now has 19 career game-winning goals and six penalty kick goals.

Junior goalkeeper Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College) posted his 12th career shutout by making five saves. Grove City out-shot the Panthers (0-2), 27-11. Grove City also owned a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

Grove City will host La Roche in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
