Wolverines open PAC play with shutout win
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over host Waynesburg at John F. Wiley Stadium. Grove City is now 6-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the PAC.
Senior forward Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) gave Grove City a 1-0 lead at 25:13 by scoring off a free kick.
The Wolverines broke the match open in the second half. Senior midfielder Jonathan Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) extended the lead to 2-0 at 46:45 with his first collegiate goal. Senior Jonathan Mahtani (Elk Grove, Ill./Trinity Christian, Pa.) assisted Breese.
McNees added his second goal of the afternoon at the 77:49 mark. Senior defender Stuart McCommas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) assisted McNees. The Wolverines then closed the scoring at 89:45 as freshman Joel Metz (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) recorded his first collegiate goal. Freshman Ryan Lesser (Charlottesville, Pa./Covenant School) assisted Metz's goal.
Junior goalkeeper Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College) stopped four shots to secure the shutout. It is Grove City's sixth shutout this year.
Grove City owned a 22-10 shot edge. The Wolverines played 23 players in the match.
Grove City is the defending PAC champion. The Wolverines continue conference play Wednesday afternoon at Westminster. The match starts at 4 p.m.
