Wolverines clinch PAC Tournament berth
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) recorded a hat trick Tuesday afternoon, helping lift the Grove City College men's soccer team to a 6-0 triumph over Thiel in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at College Field. The victory clinches a berth in the season-ending PAC Championship Tournament for the Wolverines (9-5-1, 3-2 PAC).
McNees headed in a Chad Ashby (High Point, N.C./Wesleyan Academy) corner kick just 2:55 into the match, giving Grove City a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines carried that lead into the second half before breaking the match open with five goals over a 40-minute span.
McNees opened the second half with a goal at 47:28. It is his 60th career goal. Senior Jonathan Mahtani (Elk Grove, Ill./Trinity Christian, Pa.) supplied the assist. McNees then completed the hat trick with an unassisted score at 51:29. He now has 15 goals on the season.
Junior Barry Snyder (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) extended the lead to 4-0 at 58:08 with an unassisted goal, his first of the season. Freshman Joel Metz (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) then posted his second career goal -- an unassisted score -- at 62:00, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Sophomore Ben Kristobak (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) capped the scoring at 85:22 with his first goal of the season. Frosh Ryan Lesser (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) assisted.
In goal, junior Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College) and freshman Tim Lansing (Menands, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) combined for the shutout. Grove City owned a 17-1 edge in total shots.
The Wolverines will host Thomas More Saturday at 2 p.m. in Grove City's PAC and regular season finale.
