Grove City blanks Thomas More in regular season finale

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team earned its fifth straight victory Saturday afternoon, picking up a 4-0 victory over visiting Thomas More in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at College Field.

Grove City closes the regular season with an 11-5-1 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the PAC. At 4-2, Grove City is the No. 3 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament. The Wolverines will face Westminster Tuesday in the PAC semifinals in New Wilmington.

The Wolverines scored twice in each half against Thomas More Saturday. Junior Eli Lamborn (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) broke the scoreless tie with a goal at 24:54. Senior Ian Lamborn (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg), Eli's brother, assisted on the goal.

Grove City then doubled its lead at 42:23 as sophomore Matt Sol (Crofton, Md./South River) scored his first goal of 2006. Sophomore Tyler Ferrier (Newtown Square, Pa./Delaware County Christian) assisted Sol.

An "own goal" at 46:05 gave Grove City a 3-0 lead. Senior Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) sealed the victory four minutes later with his team-leading 17th goal of the season. Ferrier provided the assist at 50:14.

Junior goalkeeper Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College) stopped six shots to earn the win. Manahan played 76 minutes in goal while freshman Tim Lansing (Menands, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) finished off the combined shutout.

Grove City out-shot the Saints (5-11-1, 1-4-1) 16-6.
