Grove City slips past Goucher, 3-2

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team earned its first victory of 2007 by pulling out a 3-2 win over Goucher Friday afternoon at Messiah College.

Junior Matt Sol (Crofton, Md./South River) broke a 2-2 tie in the 88th minute by scoring his first career game-winning goal. Freshman Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield) assisted Sol's game-winner.

Freshman Chuck Witt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) scored his first two collegiate goals, helping the Wolverines (1-1-1) take a 2-0 lead in the second half. Witt scored an unassisted goal at 22:30, then scored again in the 58th minute after a Kern assist. Goucher eventually tied the match at 2-2 before Sol put Grove City ahead to stay.

Senior goalkeeper Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College) stopped five shots to earn the victory. Each team had 12 shots. Goucher had four corner kicks while Grove City had one.

Grove City will face tournament host Messiah Saturday night at 7 p.m. Messiah is the two-time defending NCAA Division III national champion.
