Ashby goal lifts Grove City to OT win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior midfielder Chad Ashby (High Point, N.C./Wesleyan Academy) scored his first goal of 2007 with 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime Thursday afternoon, vaulting Grove City to a 2-1 home victory over Franciscan University in a non-conference men's soccer match at College Field. It is Ashby's first career game-winning goal.

The goal came after a Grove City free kick. Ashby corralled the loose ball in front of the net and directed it into the goal.

Grove City (3-5-2) took a 1-0 lead at 7:54 as freshman Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield) scored an unassisted goal. Franciscan tied the match in the 37th minute as Kyle Langan's free kick set up a goal by Jamie Cleaton.

Grove City outshot the Barons, 36-5. Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Lansing (Menands, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) earned the victory in goal after posting two saves. Lansing (2-0) played the second half and overtime. Senior Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College) played the first half in goal.

Grove City also owned an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Wolverines will open Presidents' Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Bethany at 3 p.m.
