CMU tops Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Carnegie Mellon improved to 7-0-1 overall Tuesday afternoon by earning a 5-0 win over host Grove City (1-6-2) in non-conference men's soccer action at College Field.

CMU, the nation's No. 18 squad in the NSCAA Division III poll, broke a scoreless tie at 22:44 on an unassisted goal by Jonathan Simon. Simon scored again at 24:41 to double the lead.

In the second half, Ryan Browne scored goals at 49:52 and 56:50 to extend the lead to 4-0. Ricky Griffin closed the scoring with a goal at 59:55.

For Grove City, junior goalkeeper Sean Osborne (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) stopped 12 shots. CMU out-shot Grove City, 25-4, and had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.

Grove City will wrap up the non-conference portion of the 2008 schedule Saturday night at Case Western Reserve. The match begins at 7:30 p.m. in Cleveland.
