Wolverines blank Thiel in PAC opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over visiting Thiel at College Field. It is the Wolverines' first shutout victory of the season.

Senior midfielder Bob Terhune (East Stroudsburg, Pa./North Warren, N.J.) put Grove City ahead 1-0 at the 16:53 mark with an unassisted goal from the right wing. It is Terhune's first goal of the season and the first game-winning goal of his career.

Senior midfielder Matt Sol (Crofton, Md./South River) extended the lead to 2-0 at 24:01 with his first career penalty kick goal. It is Sol's first goal of the season and the first penalty kick goal for the Wolverines since 2006.

Grove City (2-7-2, 1-0 PAC) closed the scoring in the second half as sophomore forward Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield) scored his first goal of the season at 69:35. Sophomore Erich Beyer (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) assisted Kern's goal.

In goal, junior Sean Osborne (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) stopped seven shots to earn his first career shutout win. It is Osborne's second shutout of the season. The Wolverines out-shot Thiel, 25-8.

For Thiel (4-7, 0-1 PAC), goalkeepers David Rafle and Tim Smith both made four saves.

Grove City is undefeated in its last six conference openers (3-0-3), including a 1-0-2 mark under third-year head coach Mike Dreves.

Grove City will host PAC rival Bethany Tuesday at 4 p.m.
