Surging Wolverines blank Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team scored three second-half goals Saturday night in earning a 3-0 victory over host Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Jack Wiley Stadium. It is the third straight shutout win for the Wolverines, who are now 3-0 in the PAC.
Grove City (4-7-2 overall) broke a scoreless tie at 50:00 as junior Joel Metz (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) headed in his first goal of the 2008 season. Metz's goal came off a corner kick from freshman Adam Brewer (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). It is Metz's first career game-winning goal and Brewer's first collegiate assist.
Five minutes later, sophomore Chuck Witt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) scored his third goal of the season after an assist from classmate Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield). That combination also produced the final score of the night as Witt scored off a Kern assist in the 82nd minute. Witt leads the team with four goals while Kern's three assists are tops on the squad.
In goal, junior Sean Osborne (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) recorded five saves to notch his fourth shutout of the season. Waynesburg (5-8-1, 0-1 PAC) out-shot Grove City, 10-8. Waynesburg also had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Grove City has a one-game lead in the PAC over Westminster (1-0 PAC). The Wolverines are off to their best start in conference play since the 2003 team opened PAC play with a 5-0 record.
The Wolverines will face Saint Vincent Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Latrobe, Pa.
