Wolverines fall to No. 5 Messiah

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team fell to 5-9-2 overall Tuesday afternoon with a 5-0 setback against fifth-ranked Messiah College (11-2-2) in a non-conference match at College Field.

Grove City blanked Messiah for 58 minutes before the Falcons' Geoff Fezon scored on a deflection to break the 0-0 tie. Messiah then broke the match open with four goals in a 10-minute span later in the second half.

Josh Sanders scored at 70:24, then extended the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal at 74:18. Danny Thompson scored Messiah's fourth goal at 79:23. Thompson then assisted a goal by Trevor Lee at 80:50.

Junior goalkeeper Sean Osborne (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) stopped 12 shots for Grove City. Messiah out-shot Grove City, 32-0. The match featured just seven total fouls -- four against Messiah and three by Grove City.

Messiah advanced to the NCAA Championship Tournament national semifinals in 2007. The Falcons have won five NCAA Division III titles in the last 10 seasons. Messiah leads the all-time series with Grove City, 5-1.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
