Grove City rolls past Geneva on Senior Day
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team wrapped up the 2008 regular season Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 home victory over Geneva in a matchup between Presidents' Athletic Conference members.
Grove City trailed 1-0 in the first half but forged a tie at 34:03 as sophomore Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield) scored an unassisted goal. It is Kern's fourth goal of the season.
Grove City (6-10-3) then took the lead at 55:51 as junior Joel Metz (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) scored his second goal of the season on an unassisted blast from 25 yards out. It is Metz's first game-winning goal of the season.
The Wolverines extended the lead to 3-1 at 78:15 as senior Paul Cardinal (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Bible Baptist) tallied his first goal of 2008. Kern supplied the assist, his team-leading fourth of the season. Senior Bob Terhune (East Stroudsburg, Pa./North Warren, N.J.) then closed the scoring at 83:01 with his third goal of 2008.
In goal, junior Sean Osborne (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) stopped six shots to earn his sixth victory of the season. Osborne made three saves in each half. Grove City out-shot the Golden Tornadoes, 14-11. Geneva had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
The four goals are a season-high for the Wolverines. Grove City is now 4-0-2 in its last six matches against Geneva.
Grove City recognized seniors Jack Adams (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland), Cardinal, Ben Kristobak (Titusville, Pa./Titusville), Matt Sol (Crofton, Md./South River) and Terhune prior to Saturday's match as part of Senior Day festivities.
Grove City will play in a PAC Championship Tournament semifinal match Tuesday. Time, site and opponent have yet to be determined.
