Wolverine rally falls short at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team saw its bid for a second Presidents' Athletic Conference title in four years dashed Tuesday night as host Westminster nipped Grove City, 3-2, in a PAC Championship Tournament semifinal at Memorial Field.

Grove City, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, trailed 3-0 early in the second half before charging back. The Wolverines broke through at 56:20 as senior midfielder Matt Sol (Crofton, Md./South River) scored on a penalty kick. It is Sol's second goal of the season.

The lead shrunk to 3-2 at 74:24 as Westminster misplayed a ball in its own end, resulting in an "own goal" for Grove City (6-11-3). However, Grove City could not score the equalizer.

Westminster (15-5) scored twice in the final six minutes of the first half to take a 2-0 lead by halftime. Coty Hainsey scored at 39:44 while Garrett Horvath scored at 42:57. Westminster, the tournament's top seed, pushed the lead to 3-0 at 50:36 on a goal by Brice Lott.

For Grove City, junior goalkeeper Sean Osborne (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) stopped six shots. Westminster out-shot Grove City, 21-14. The Wolverines owned a 7-6 edge in shots in the second half. Westminster had three corner kicks while Grove City had two.

It is the final game at Grove City for seniors Jack Adams (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland), Paul Cardinal (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Bible Baptist), Ben Kristobak (Titusville, Pa./Titusville), Sol and Bob Terhune (East Stroudsburg, Pa./North Warren, N.J.)
