Grove City blanks Hilbert
HAMBURG, N.Y. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team posted its third shutout of the 2009 season Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines notched a 2-0 win over host Hilbert in non-conference action. It is the Wolverines' second straight shutout.
Grove City (2-1-1) took a 1-0 lead at 34:11 as junior defender Zach Barzanty (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) scored his first goal of the 2009 season. It is also Barzanty's first career game-winning goal. Junior Daniel Bernal (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian) provided the assist -- his team-leading second assist of the season.
The Wolverines then doubled the lead at the 70:47 mark. Sophomore Brian Eckenhoff (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) headed in his first collegiate goal after a free kick from fellow sophomore Adam Brewer (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). It is Brewer's first assist of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Sean Osborne (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) earned the shutout victory after making five saves in goal. Osborne now has eight career shutouts.
Grove City outshot Hilbert 27-5. The Wolverines also owned a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
At 2-1-1, Grove City is off to its best start since a 3-1 start in 2006. The Wolverines return to action Wednesday at Penn State Behrend. The non-conference match starts at 4 p.m.
