Wolverines blank Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team evened its Presidents' Athletic Conference record at 1-1 Tuesday afternoon by securing a 3-0 win over host Thiel in a conference match at Alumni Stadium.

Grove City (4-6-1) surged ahead at the 30:19 mark as junior Austin Bernal (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian) scored an unassisted goal. It is his first collegiate goal.

The Wolverines then sealed the win in the second half with a pair of goals in a seven-minute span. Freshman Connor Baer (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) scored his first collegiate goal at 66:09 while junior Chuck Witt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) followed with his second goal of 2009 at the 73:24 mark. Sophomore Brian Eckenhoff (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) assisted Witt's goal.

Grove City owned an 18-3 edge in shots along with a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Sean Osborne (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) recorded his fifth shutout of the season by making three saves.

The Grove City defense has now surrendered just 14 goals in 11 matches this season. The Wolverines' five shutouts rank second in the PAC.

Grove City will visit Geneva Saturday afternoon.
