Grove City tops Sage

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 1-0-1 overall Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 1-0 victory over Sage Colleges in the consolation game of the Oswego State Tournament at Laker Field.

Grove City broke a scoreless tie at 13:49 when sophomore Alex Ayer (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) scored an unassisted goal. It is Ayer's first career game-winning goal.

In goal, freshman Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped four shots to preserve his first collegiate shutout.

Grove City outshot Sage (0-1-1) 15-6 and also had an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.

The teams had not met prior to Saturday's clash. Ayer earned All-Tournament honors for his efforts.

The Wolverines will host Heidelberg Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the 2010 home opener at College Field.
