Grove City tops Penn State-New Kensington

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 6-2-2 overall Thursday afternoon by earning an 8-1 victory at Penn State-New Kensington in non-conference action.

Grove City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Senior midfielder Evan Moore (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) opened the scoring with his first goal of the 2010 season. Sophomore Alex Ayer (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) assisted Moore's goal.

The lead swelled to 2-0 when senior Alex Ford (Bridgeville, Pa./Kiski Prep) tallied his first goal of the season. Moore assisted Ford's score.

Freshman Richie Kocur (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) closed the first-half scoring with an unassisted goal.

Ayer opened the second half by scoring his second goal of the season. Sophomore Andrew Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) assisted Ayer's goal.

Junior Ben Kuniholm (Fairfax, Va./Trinity Christian) contributed to each of Grove City's next three goals. He assisted on a goal by senior Austin Bernal (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian), giving Grove City a 5-1 lead. Kuniholm then scored his first goal of the season. He followed up by assisting a goal by senior Daniel Bernal (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian).

Sophomore Evan Bjorndal (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) closed the scoring by recording his first goal of the season. Senior Ben Wagner (Rochester, N.Y./Charles Finney) assisted Bjorndal's score.

Grove City owned a 24-4 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped three shots in 75 minutes. Sophomore Jesse Wilson (Murrysville, Pa./Trinity Christian) played the final 15 minutes in goal.

The teams had not met prior to Thursday's match.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener.
