W&J edges Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 setback against host Washington & Jefferson at Alexandre Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Grove City (6-3-2, 0-1 PAC) took a 1-0 lead at 50:36 when senior Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield) scored his third goal of 2010. Junior Brian Eckenhoff (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) assisted Kern's goal.

W&J (5-2-2, 1-0) countered with two goals in a nine-minute span, however. Chris Skovira scored an unassisted goal at 70:33 to tie the match. W&J then took a 2-1 lead at 79:35 on a goal by Thad Piscatelli.

W&J owned an 8-7 edge in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped three shots for Grove City.

Grove City hosts conference foe Westminster Tuesday at 4 p.m.
