Grove City storms past Westminster, 4-1
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team scored three goals in a four-minute span during the second half Tuesday afternoon, lifting the host Wolverines (7-3-2, 1-1) to a 4-1 victory over visiting Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at College Field.
The Wolverines broke a 1-1 tie at the 77:21 mark when senior Chuck Witt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) scored his fifth goal of the season. It is Witt's second game-winner of 2010.
Grove City quickly extended the lead to 3-1 just 73 seconds later on an unassisted goal by junior Adam Brewer (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). The Wolverines then closed the scoring at 81:49 when Brewer assisted a goal from senior Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield).
Westminster (2-7-2, 1-1) took a 1-0 lead when Jake Huey scored on a penalty kick at 50:03. Grove City rebounded moments later, though, as sophomore Alex Ayer (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) tied the match with a goal at 52:29.
Grove City owned a 16-11 edge in shots and 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped five shots to earn the win.
The four-goal effort represents the Wolverines' largest output against Westminster since a 7-0 victory over the Titans in 1996.
Grove City will host Geneva Friday at 4 p.m.
