Grove City blanks Thiel
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four Grove City College players scored goals Tuesday afternoon to help vault the Wolverines to a 4-0 victory over visiting Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference men's soccer action at College Field. Grove City is now 9-3-2 overall, which is the program's best record through 14 matches since the 2001 team went 10-4.
Junior Adam Brewer (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) put Grove City ahead just 56 seconds into the match by scoring his second goal of the season. Senior Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield) assisted Brewer's goal.
Grove City doubled its lead to 2-0 at the 29:50 mark when senior Austin Bernal (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian) tallied his second goal of 2010. Senior Evan Moore (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) assisted Bernal's goal.
The Wolverines then scored a pair of insurance goals in a three-minute span during the second half. Senior Chuck Witt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) tallied an unassisted goal at 58:05. Moore closed the scoring at 60:50 with a penalty kick goal.
In goal, freshman Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) made two saves to secure the Wolverines' fifth shutout of the season.
Grove City (2-1 PAC) owned a 21-8 edge in shots. Each team had six corner kicks.
Witt leads the Wolverines with six goals this year. Kern and Moore share the team lead with three assists each.
Thiel fell to 6-7-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Grove City hosts Bethany Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in conference action. That match concludes a four-match homestand for the Wolverines.
