Grove City wins 5th straight

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 11-3-2 overall and 4-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night with a 4-0 victory over host Waynesburg at John Wiley Stadium. The Wolverines have won five straight matches, including the last three by 4-0 scores.

Grove City broke through early as sophomore Andrew Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) scored at the 7:02 mark to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Freshman Daniel Adams (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) assisted Quinn's goal.

Senior Zach Barzanty (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) pushed the lead to 2-0 at 28:37 when he headed in a corner kick. Senior Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield) assisted Barzanty's goal. Kern leads Grove City with five assists.

Senior Chuck Witt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) closed the scoring by scoring a pair of unassisted goals in the second half. He scored the Wolverines' third goal at 49:19 and then added the fourth score at 60:28. Witt leads the team with eight goals this season.

Freshman goalkeeper Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped three shots in the second half to preserve the Wolverines' seventh shutout of 2010.

Grove City outshot the Yellow Jackets (5-10-1, 0-5 PAC) 12-0 in the first half and 17-7 for the game. The Wolverines also owned a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Grove City has outscored its opponents 42-11 this season. The Wolverines' 11-3-2 record is the program's best through 16 matches since 1996, when Grove City won 14 of its first 16 matches. Current head coach Mike Dreves captained that 1996 team.

The Wolverines will visit Saint Vincent Friday at 1 p.m. in conference action.
