Grove City rolls past Thomas More

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team wrapped up the 2010 regular season Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 2-0 victory over visiting Thomas More in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at College Field.

Seniors Jake Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield) and Chuck Witt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) both scored in the final 10 minutes to help the Wolverines (13-4-2, 6-1 PAC) secure their sixth straight conference shutout. Kern scored at 80:15 after receiving an assist from sophomore Alex Ayer (Farmington, Conn./Farmington).

Witt then added an insurance goal at 87:33. Kern assisted Witt's goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped four shots in earning Grove City's ninth shutout of the season. Grove City owned a 14-9 advantage in shots. Each team had one corner kick.

Witt and Kern share the team lead with 18 points each. Witt has a team-high nine goals. Kern has six goals and a team-leading six assists.

Grove City honored its 10 seniors prior to the match as part of Senior Day. In addition to Kern and Witt, defender Zach Barzanty (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette), midfielders Austin Bernal (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian), Daniel Bernal (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian), Erich Beyer (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) and Alex Ford (Bridgeville, Pa./Kiski Prep), defender Dave Larkin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), and midfielders Evan Moore (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) and Ben Wagner (Rochester, N.Y./Charles Finney) all played their final home regular-season match Saturday.

The Wolverines have earned the No. 2 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament. Grove City will host No. 3 Bethany Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the tournament semifinals.
