Bethany tops Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Bethany in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Tuesday afternoon at College Field. Third-seeded Bethany (10-9-1) advances to Saturday's championship match and will play either Washington & Jefferson or Thomas More.

Bethany jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than 15 minutes into Tuesday's match as forward Arkangelo James scored twice. James gave Bethany a 1-0 lead at 11:06 and then added his second goal at the 14:33 mark.

Second-seeded Grove City (13-5-2) cut the lead in half at 65:45 when senior midfielder Chuck Witt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

The Wolverines had several opportunities to tie the match in the final minutes but could not convert against Bethany goalkeeper Patrick Coleman. Coleman made six saves. For Grove City, freshman Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped four shots.

Grove City outshot Bethany 14-9, including an 11-5 edge in the second half. Grove City also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Grove City will now await a potential ECAC Southern Championship Tournament. The ECAC field will be announced Monday, November 8.
