Wolverines advance to ECAC finals
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team advanced to the finals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament Saturday afternoon by earning a 1-0 win over sixth-seeded Misericordia in the semifinals at Stevenson University.
The seventh-seeded Wolverines will now face No. 4 Stevenson in Sunday's championship match at noon.
Grove City (15-5-2) broke a scoreless tie at 18:56 when junior forward Brian Eckenhoff (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) scored his fourth goal of the season from the top of the box. Senior Evan Moore (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) assisted Eckenhoff's goal.
Defensively, Grove City recorded its 10th shutout of the season after surrendering just eight shots for the match. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped four shot to earn the victory for the Wolverines. Grove City owned a 10-8 edge in shots.
Grove City also had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Grove City is in the ECAC finals for the first time since 2005. The Wolverines won the ECAC title in 1996. Current head coach Mike Dreves captained that 1996 team.
Stevenson blanked Bethany in the other semifinal, 6-0. Sunday's match will be the first meeting between Grove City and Stevenson (formerly known as Villa Julie College).
