Stevenson tops Grove City in ECAC title game

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to host Stevenson University Sunday afternoon in the championship match of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament. Grove City, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, finishes the season with a 15-6-2 overall record. The 15 wins are the second-most in program history in one season.

Fourth-seeded Stevenson (14-5-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead but Grove City cut the lead in half at 52:55 when junior Adam Brewer (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) scored his fifth goal of the season. Brewer scored after receiving a cross from freshman defender Daniel Adams (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands).

However, Stevenson pushed its lead out to 3-1 at 60:27 when Ryan Pierce headed in a throw-in from Ansger Otto.

Otto also assisted each of the Mustangs' first two goals in the match. Tyler King scored the first goal of the match at 12:51 to put Stevenson ahead. King doubled the lead to 2-0 by scoring 24 seconds into the second half.

For Grove City, freshman goalkeeper Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped three shots. Stevenson out-shot Grove City 14-10. Each team had two corner kicks.

Grove City had been in pursuit of its first ECAC title since 1996. The 1996 team squad set the single-season program win record by going 16-2. The Wolverines also reached the ECAC championship match in 2005.

The Wolverines and Mustangs had not met prior to Sunday's match.
