Second half rally foils Grove City

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team dropped to 1-2 overall Tuesday night with a 5-2 setback at Allegheny in non-conference action at Robertson Field.

Grove City rallied from a 2-0 deficit to forge a 2-2 tie by halftime. Sophomore Zach Juergens (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) scored an unassisted goal at 39:16 to cut the lead in half. The Wolverines then knotted the match at 42:59 when freshman Eric Fitchwell (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) recorded an unassisted goal, his second score of the season.

However, Allegheny (3-0) broke open the match with three second-half goals. David DelGreco broke the tie at 48:52 with his second goal of the night. Andrew Miller scored his second goal of the match at 57:48 and Andrew Zimmer closed the scoring at 78:54.

Miller scored 3 minutes, 54 seconds into the match to give the Gators the lead. DelGreco scored his first goal of the match at 13:36.

In goal, sophomore Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) played the first half and stopped one shot. Junior Caleb Koch (Gaithersburg, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) played the final 45 minutes and recorded two saves.

Allegheny owned a 10-5 edge in shots and a 4-2 corner kick edge.

The teams had not met since 1999. Allegheny is Grove City's most frequently-played opponent. The teams played every season from 1938 to 1999. Grove City still owns a commanding lead in the series, 43-20-5.

Grove City visits Hilbert Saturday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference match.
