Wolverines roll past Hilbert
HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Grove City
College men’s soccer team improved to 2-2 Saturday afternoon by picking up a 4-1
victory over host Hilbert in non-conference action.
Grove City’s reserves accounted for
all four goals in the match, including a pair from sophomore Kyle Matherne (Camp
Hill, Pa./Camp Hill). Matherne broke a scoreless tie at 34:21 with his first
goal of the season. Freshman Jordan Carmichael (Hewitt, N.J./West Milford)
assisted Matherne’s goal.
Hilbert tied the match 1-1 at 41:58
on a goal by Ed Sarcione but Grove City took control of the match with three
second-half goals.
Sophomore Jesse Wilson (Murrysville,
Pa./Trinity Christian) broke the tie with the eventual game-winner at 66:19.
Junior Andrew Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) supplied the assist.
Matherne pushed the lead to 3-1 with
an unassisted goal at 85:32. Senior midfielder Adam Brewer (Beaver, Pa./Beaver)
closed the scoring at 88:35. Sophomore defender Dan Adams (The Woodlands,
Texas/The Woodlands) assisted Brewer’s goal.
Junior Caleb Koch (Gaithersburg,
Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) earned the win in goal for Grove City. Hilbert put just
one shot on goal.
Grove City owned a 19-4 advantage in
shots, along with an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Scott Walker made 12 saves for
Hilbert (0-3).
