Grove City tops Lions

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team earned a 6-1 win over visiting Penn State-New Kensington Friday afternoon in non-conference action at College Field. The win moves Grove City to 5-3 overall.

Five different Wolverines scored in the win, including two goals from junior Andrew Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus).

Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead at 9:26 when freshman Eric Fitchwell (Monroeville, Pa./Monroeville) scored his third goal of 2011. Sophomore Richie Kocur (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) assisted the goal.

Kocur boosted the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal at the 16:07 mark and senior Brian Eckenhoff (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) closed the first-half scoring with an unassisted goal at 42:44.

Penn State-New Kensington (4-5) trimmed the lead to 3-1 at 50:06 on a goal by Chris Mercier but Quinn answered with his first goal just 32 seconds later. Senior Tim Boswell (Jonesborough, Tenn./Providence Academy) assisted Quinn's goal.

Quinn added an unassisted score at 57:15. Freshman Matthew Snyder (Nazareth, Pa./Faith Christian) capped the scoring by recording his first collegiate goal at 72:10.

Grove City owned a 37-2 edge in shots. The Wolverines also had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Caleb Koch (Gaithersburg, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) stopped one shot.

Grove City will visit Juniata Tuesday at 4 p.m. in non-conference action.
