Wolverines storm past W&J
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 4-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson at College Field.
The Wolverines grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 6:40 mark when junior defender Jesse Wilson (Murrysville, Pa./Trinity Christian) headed in a corner kick from senior Ben Kuniholm (Fairfax, Va./Trinity Christian).
Grove City (9-4 overall) pushed the lead to 2-0 at 36:59 when junior forward Andrew Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) scored the first of his two goals. Sophomore Brian Wilkes (Richfield, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) assisted Quinn's goal.
Quinn again scored at 43:48, giving Grove City a 3-0 lead at halftime. Junior Alex Ayer (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) assisted Quinn's score.
The Wolverines added an insurance goal in the second half when Wilkes scored at 65:19. Freshman Jordan Carmichael (Hewitt, N.J./West Milford) supplied the assist.
W&J (4-9, 1-3 PAC) broke up the shutout at 81:57 on an unassisted goal by David Benko.
Grove City outshot the Presidents 15-10. Grove City also had a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Caleb Koch (Gaithersburg, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) made four saves while playing 74 minutes, 15 seconds in goal. Sophomore Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped two shots over the final 15:45.
Quinn leads Grove City with seven goals, including a team-high three game-winning goals. Ayer and Carmichael both have three assists, which is tied for the team lead. Sophomore Richie Kocur (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore Daniel Adams (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) also have three assists each.
Grove City steps out of conference play Wednesday night when the Wolverines visit Carnegie Mellon at 7 p.m.
