Grove City blanks CMU

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory at perennial powerhouse Carnegie Mellon Wednesday night in non-conference action at the CMU Field.

Grove City (10-4) broke a scoreless tie at the 56:47 mark when junior forward Andrew Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Freshman Eric Fitchwell (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) assisted Quinn's goal.

Quinn has scored the game-winner in three consecutive matches for the Wolverines, who earned their first win over the Tartans since 1986. Quinn, this week's Presidents' Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, also scored game-winning goals against Thiel and Washington & Jefferson last week.

In goal, junior Caleb Koch (Gaithersburg, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) stopped two shots to secure Grove City's sixth shutout of the season. Koch has not allowed a goal in his last 348 minutes, 31 seconds of action.

Grove City owned an 11-7 advantage in shots. CMU had three corner kicks and Grove City had two.

Grove City has now won four straight and seven of its last eight matches. Carnegie Mellon dropped to 5-7-1 overall. The Tartans had been 4-0-1 against Presidents' Athletic Conference foes prior to Grove City's victory.

The Wolverines return to conference action Saturday against visiting Geneva. The match begins at 1 p.m.
