Wolverines top Titans

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team wrapped up the 2011 regular season Saturday night with a 3-2, double-overtime victory over host Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Memorial Field.

Junior Andrew Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) broke a 2-2 tie in the second overtime by scoring on a penalty kick at 107:17. It is Quinn's fifth game-winning goal of the season and his 10th overall score of 2011.

Grove City (12-4-1, 6-1-1 PAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead at 36:43 when senior midfielder Adam Brewer (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) scored his sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Daniel Adams (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) assisted Brewer's goal.

Westminster (4-14, 2-6 PAC) forged a 1-1 tie 90 seconds into the second half on a goal by Jake Huey. Grove City countered at 82:19 when freshman Eric Fitchwell (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) registered his sixth score of the season.

Westminster sent the match to overtime with 26 seconds left in regulation on Coty Hainsey's unassisted score.

Grove City outshot the Titans 20-16. The Wolverines had seven corner kicks and Westminster had three. Junior goalkeeper Caleb Koch (Gaithersburg, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) earned the victory in goal after stopping three shots.

Grove City earned the No. 3 seed in next week's conference tournament. The Wolverines will visit No. 2 Geneva (6-1-1 PAC) Wednesday night in the conference semifinals. The teams tied 1-1 October 22 in Grove City. Geneva earns the higher seed due to goal differential in conference matches.

The Wolverines have won 27 total matches over the past two seasons. That is the highest two-season win total in program history. The 1995 and 1996 teams combined to win 26 matches over two seasons. Current head coach Mike Dreves captained both of those teams.
