Wolverines blank Thiel

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 3-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tuesday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over visiting Thiel in conference action at College Field.

Grove City (6-7 overall) took a 1-0 lead at 23:01 when junior Richie Kocur (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) collected a loose ball around the goal and booted the ball in for his first goal of 2012.

The Wolverines then took command of the match by scoring twice in the first 3 minutes, 7 seconds of the second half. Senior Alex Ayer (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) scored an unassisted goal 40 seconds into the half. Ayer now has three goals this season.

Junior Kyle Matherne (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) closed the scoring at 48:07 by recording his second goal of the season. Junior Daniel Adams (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) assisted Matherne's goal. Adams has a team-leading five assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) and junior Chris Burgan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Trinity Christian) combined for the shutout in goal. Weaver played 70:42 and Burgan played the final 19 minutes, 18 seconds. Burgan made one save.

Grove City owned a 24-9 edge in shots, along with an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Each of Grove City's three league wins this year has been by shutout. The Wolverines have outscored conference foes 9-1 this year.

The Wolverines will visit conference rival Washington & Jefferson Saturday at 1 p.m.
