CMU edges Grove City in OT

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to visiting Carnegie Mellon Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at College Field.

The Tartans (10-2-1), ranked No. 8 in this week's NSCAA Division III poll, scored 69 seconds into overtime when Ben Bryant drilled a free kick from the top of the box into the goal.

Grove City (6-9) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when junior Kyle Matherne (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) scored an unassisted goal at 41:12.

The Wolverines doubled the lead in the second half when freshman forward Tim Shackleton (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) headed in a rebound at 68:48.

Carnegie Mellon scored twice in the final seven minutes to force overtime. Chris Wysocki scored on a deflection at 83:05, cutting the lead in half. Mike Ferraco recorded the tying goal at 87:07.

Freshman goalkeeper Brenden Alfery (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) stopped a career-high 14 shots for Grove City, including nine saves in the first half. CMU outshot Grove City 30-10. The Tartans had 11 corner kicks and Grove City had six corners.

The road team has won each of the last two meetings in the series. Grove City earned a 1-0 win at CMU last year.

Grove City will visit Geneva Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
