Wolverines fall in shootout
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team had its bid for the Presidents' Athletic Conference title come to an end Wednesday night as host Geneva advanced to the conference tournament finals by way of a shootout at Reeves Field.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw through 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. Geneva (9-5-4) won the penalty kick shootout 8-7. Geneva, the No. 2 seed, will now face top-seeded Thomas More Saturday for the conference title.
Grove City (8-9-2) owned a 22-11 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in corner kicks for the match. In goal, freshman Brenden Alfery (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) made four saves in recording Grove City's eighth shutout of the season, including its second of Geneva this year.
The Wolverines also played to a 0-0 draw at Geneva October 13.
In the shootout, freshman Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh), junior Daniel Adams (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), senior Josh Kern (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield), senior Andrew Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus), senior Evan Bjorndal (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson), senior Jesse Wilson (Murrysville, Pa./Trinity Christian) and junior Richie Kocur (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) all scored.
Geneva's Robert Butler scored the decisive goal in the second half of the ninth round, breaking the 7-7 tie.
Wednesday's match marked the first time Grove City had been in a shootout since advancing past Swarthmore in the ECAC Southern Championship Tournament quarterfinals November 8, 2006.
