Grove City edges Muskies in double overtime

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's soccer team improved to 3-3-1 overall by pulling out a 3-2 double-overtime win at Muskingum Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Muskie Field.

Junior forward Jordan Carmichael (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) scored the game-winner 21 seconds into the second overtime period for Grove City. The unassisted score gave the Wolverines their second consecutive overtime win.

After a scoreless first half, Grove City broke through at 65:54 as sophomore forward Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) scored an unassisted goal.

Muskingum (3-4) forged a 1-1 tie at 74:53 when Andreas Pfefferkorn scored on a penalty kick. Pfefferkorn put the Muskies ahead, 2-1, with a goal at the 80:58 mark.

Grove City tied the match with two minutes remaining in regulation when freshman midfielder Dale Reese IV (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) recorded his first collegiate goal at 87:58.

Grove City owned a 30-12 advantage in shots, including a 26-11 edge in regulation. The Wolverines also had 13 corner kicks, compared to just four for Muskingum.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) stopped three shots for Grove City. Weaver improved to 3-0-1 on the season.

Four of Grove City's seven matches this season have gone to overtime. The Wolverines are 2-1-1 in those matches. Dating back to last season, seven of the Wolverines' last 12 maches have gone beyond regulation.

Grove City returns to action next Tuesday with a home non-conference match against Heidelberg at 4 p.m.
