Grove City battles to draw with No. 10 Carnegie Mellon
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Sophomore Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) scored the game-tying goal in the 46th minute and the Grove City College men's soccer team overcame an early Carnegie Mellon goal to earn a 1-1 double-overtime tie with the nationally-ranked Tartans in non-conference action on Saturday evening.
Carnegie Mellon, ranked 10th by d3soccer.com and 18th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in the latest polls, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute as Matt Sarett found Max Tassano for his fifth goal of the season.
The Wolverines would answer, as freshman Frank Hueber (Philadelphia, Pa./Calvary Christian) found Loew who scored his sixth goal of the season just 13 seconds into the second half.
For Hueber, it was the first assist and point of his collegiate career.
That would be all of the scoring, as the Wolverine defense withstood a strong Carnegie Mellon offense that owned a 23-11 total shot advantage.
Sophomore Brenden Alfery (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) posted a strong showing in goal with eight saves.
The Wolverines, now 3-4-2, kick off their Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule on Friday when they host Waynesburg at 4:00 p.m. The game is also part of the College's Homecoming festivities and the 75th anniversary celebration for the men's soccer program.
