Wolverines fall to Waynesburg in PAC opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team held a 25-12 advantage in total shots but couldn't find the back of the net, falling to Waynesburg 1-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for both teams on a rainy Friday afternoon at College Field.

After an evenly played first 44 minutes of action, the Yellow Jackets' Dimitri Arvanitopulos was able to head a ball off the leg of a Grove City defender with just 51 seconds remaining in the first half to give Waynesburg a lead that it wouldn't relenquish.

The Wolverines had a number of opportunities to even the score, holding a 16-5 advantage in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks during the second half. Sophomore Justin Phillips (Simi Valley, Calif./Oaks Christian) took seven of his team-leading nine shots after the break, including a pair of headers off corner kicks that were saved by Waynesburg goalkeeper Brandon Daughtry.

Sophomore Brenden Alfery (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) stopped four shots in goal for the Wolverines.

Grove City (3-5-2, 0-1 PAC) continues their conference schedule on Wednesday when they travel to Mercer County-rival Thiel for a 7:00 p.m. match.
