Grove City shuts out Bethany
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sophomore Jonathan Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored his first collegiate goal as the Grove City College men's soccer team controlled the game from start to finish in a 4-0 shutout win over Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany on Saturday afternoon at College Field.
Senior Kyle Matherne (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) netted his first goal of the season for the Wolverines (5-5-2, 2-1 PAC) while sophomore Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and freshman Stephen Betteridge (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) each scored in the victory.
Grove City jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Matherne controlled the ball out of a scrum off a corner and put it past Bethany keeper Callum Appelby.
The Bison (4-9-1, 0-2-1) would contain the Wolverines for the remainder of the half, but Grove City made it 2-0 in the 50th minute when Loew drew a foul in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick for his team leading seventh goal of the season.
Betteridge made it a 3-0 game in the 69th minute on an assist from junior Mike Shupp (Ephrata, Pa./Lititz Christian) before Mathes notched his goal in the 76th minute on a cross from freshman Austin Ridgley (Fombell, Pa./Riverside).
Sophomore Brenden Alfery (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) stopped four shots in goal in securing his first shutout of the season.
The Wolverines continue their PAC schedule when they host Geneva on Wednesday at 4:00.
