Reese golden goal lifts Wolverines past Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Freshman Dale Reese (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 2:31 remaining in overtime, to lift the Grove City College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Geneva in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at College Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) added an assist for the Wolverines (6-5-2, 3-1 PAC), who recorded their first multi-goal game against the Golden Tornadoes (5-7-1, 1-3) since 2008.

Geneva controlled play over the opening 20 minutes of the first half and nearly took the lead just 90 seconds into the match when Nate Musselman's shot hit the crossbar.

The Wolverines responded by controlling the remainder of the half but couldn't capitalize on a 12-4 advantage in shots as the two teams remained in a 0-0 deadlock at the break.

Geneva started the second half much like they did the first, and this time, the Golden Tornadoes made the most of it, taking a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute on a Musseman goal off a Stephen Lawrence assist.

Grove City showed its resiliency, and the Wolverines broke through in the 75th minute when Loew crossed a ball to Reese to tie the score at 1-1.

In the extra session, Geneva had the first good look, but sophomore goalkeeper Brenden Alfery (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) came up with a big save and the Wolverine defense was able to block a second attempt.

The Golden Tornadoes were called for a costly caution on a tackle just outside the box in the 98th minute to set up the game's final play. Loew blasted the ensuing free kick off the Geneva defensive wall, and Reese scooped the rebound and sent it home for his fifth goal and second game-winner of the year.

Alfery stopped six shots to earn the win in goal.

The Wolverines travel to Washington & Jefferson on Saturday for a 3:30 contest.
