Grove City whips Saint Vincent, clinches PAC berth
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team controlled the match from start to finish as the Wolverines clinched a Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament berth with a 3-0 victory over Saint Vincent on Wednesday afternoon at College Field.
Freshman Dale Reese (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Wolverines while sophomore Tim Shackleton (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and freshman Stephen Betteridge (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) each netted goals in the win.
Shackleton got things going for Grove City (8-5-4, 4-1-2 PAC) in the 18th minute, taking a beautiful chip pass from Reese and making a one-touch control before sending it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Saint Vincent (4-13, 2-5 PAC) would keep the Wolverine lead at 1-0 into halftime, but Grove City was quick to extend their lead in the second half, as Reese and sophomore Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) executed a perfect give-and-go, which Reese finished for his sixth tally of the year and fifth in PAC matches.
Betteridge added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when Jordan Carmichael (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) drew Bearcat goalkeeper Eric Houghton away from goal and found Betteridge for a touch into the open net.
Sophomores Brenden Alfery (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) combined for the shutout in goal. Alfery stopped four shots in 61:09 of action while Weaver made one save in his 28:51 on the field.
Grove City held a commanding 33-14 advantage in total shots, including a 17-5 lead in shots on goal.
The Wolverines (14 points) currently are third in the PAC standings, trailing Thomas More (7-0-0, 21 points) and Washington & Jefferson (5-1-1, 16 points), who have both also clinched PAC tournament berths. Geneva (3-3, 9 points), Waynesburg (2-3-1, 7 points) and Bethany (2-4-1, 7 points) all are battling for the remaining spot in the four-team tournament.
Grove City will host Thomas More on Saturday at 2:30 in the regular-season finale for both teams. The Wolverines will honor seniors Daniel Adams, Chris Burgan, Richie Kocur, Kyle Matherne and Brian Wilkes prior to the match.
