Grove City defeats Pitt-Greensburg for first win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four different players found the back of the net for the Grove City College men's soccer team as the Wolverines rallied from an early deficit to earn a 4-2 non-conference victory over Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday evening at College Field.

Junior Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) netted his second goal of the season while sophomore David Wurmlinger (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon), senior Jordan Carmichael (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and sophomore Stephen Betteridge (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) each scored their first goals of the year.

Grove City fell behind early in the first half when the Bobcats' Carmene Albano finished a pass from Brandon Soellner in the ninth minute to give Pitt-Greensburg a 1-0 lead.

Wurmlinger answered right away, scoring less than a minute later after receiving a ball from Loew to tie the game at 1-1.

The score would remain tied into halftime, despite a commanding 23-5 Wolverine advantage in total shots and a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Grove City didn't waste much time in the second half before taking the lead, as sophomore Frank Hueber (Philadelphia, Pa./Calvary Christian) sent a ball forward that Loew was able to corral and send home in the 51st minute.

Loew would notch his second assist of the match and third of the season when he found Carmichael at the 53-minute mark to extend Grove City's lead to 3-1, and Betteridge made it 4-1 in the 66th minute after junior Jonathan Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) slotted a ball to him in front of the goal.

The Bobcats' Brandon Malloy scored a goal in the 80th minute to complete the scoring.

Junior goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) earned the win in goal for Grove City. The Wolverines outshot Pitt-Greensburg 40-6 for the game, including a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Grove City returns to action on Thursday when they visit Allegheny for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference match.
