Wolverines draw at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team gave up the game-tying goal late in regulation but held on to earn a 2-2 tie with Allegheny in a non-conference match at Frank B. Fuhrer field on Thursday night.

Senior defender George DeAugustino (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) netted the first goal of his collegiate career and junior forward Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) also scored for the Wolverines, who played an overtime for the second time this season.

The Gators (1-1-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Axel Monzon fed a ball ahead to Nick Dias, who beat Wolverine goalkeeper Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) one-on-one on a breakaway in the 16th minute.

Grove City would control play throughout the rest of the first half, answering back in the 22nd minute when sophomore forward David Wurmlinger (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) found DeAugustino for a one-timer from the doorstep.

The Wolverines took a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute when Loew found himself alone 15 yards from goal and blasted the ball into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Grove City's advantage would hold through halftime and well into the second half, but Allegheny managed to tie the match at 2-2 in the 83rd minute when Daniel Szekely collected a Monzon shot off the post and slotted the ball past Weaver.

Each team managed just one shot on goal in the extra frames.

Weaver made four saves in goal for the Wolverines.

Grove City returns to action on Saturday, hosting Hilbert in a non-conference match at 2 p.m.
