Wolverines edged by Waynesburg in PAC opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team held a commanding 30-8 lead in total shots and a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal, but the Wolverines couldn't make a first-half lead hold up in a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Waynesburg in their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener on Friday night at John F. Wiley Stadium.

The Jackets' Cody Lemke netted the game-winner with just 27 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.

In the midst of a first half that saw the Wolverines (5-4-1) control play and hold a 13-3 lead in total shots, the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when junior Seth Loew (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) earned and converted a penalty kick goal. The goal was Loew's team-leading fourth of the season.

The Wolverines would carry that lead through halftime and would record the first 11 shots of the second half as they continued to control play. Waynesburg, however, tied the match at 1-1 when Victor Browne found Nick Brommer for a goal at the 79-minute mark.

Grove City posted the only two shots in the first overtime but to no avail. Just when it appeared as if the game would end in a draw, Lemke scored the game-winner with just 27 seconds remaining to hand the Wolverines their second-straight heartbreaking defeat to the Jackets.

Junior Ben Weaver (York, Pa./Dallastown) made two saves in goal for the Wolverines.

Grove City returns to action Wednesday when they host Thiel at 4 p.m.
